How to calculate the ideal body weight

ideal body weight

Are the near-ideal body proportions all about beauty? Obviously not, since our overweight is typically indicative of the inner disorders, both physical and psychological. To keep track of your body events, it is wise to calculate the size most appropriate for your own self.

Estimating your body size

Ideal parameters are a lure for most of us, and so they keep being on the agenda. Experts have been working out diverse formulas to estimate our bodies and bring us into peace (or, conversely, make us burst with anger). However, even now there is no single ideal body weight formula, as the perfect weight is totally unique for each individual depending on singular properties.

Age, gender, height, body type itself – those are just a few of the criteria to influence the outcome. This actually makes it impossible to arrange a one-size-fits-all model. Still, there are some most popular formulas to provide for the solution of this larger-than-life equation. These formulas are used in the ideal body weight calculator, which computes the weight deemed ideal for certain body descriptions.

Reckoning ideal measurements: men vs women

There exist 4 world`s most widespread and extensively used formulas to calculate the ideal body weight for men and the ideal body weight for women. Note these only apply to measure the parameters for over-18s.

  • By R. Miller:

Males: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet

Females: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

  • By D. Robinson:

Males: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet

Females: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

  • By J. Devine:

Males: 50.0 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

Females: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

  • By J. Hamwi:

Males: 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

Females: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet

Following any of the above, you can easily calculate your perfect kilos.

For example, you are a male being 64 inches in height and 70 kilos in weight. Let us take B. J. Devine`s and solve the problem as follows:

50.0 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet (60 inches)

50 kg + 2.3 x 4 inches (64 – 60)

50 kg + 9.2

IBW = 59.2 kg (as opposed to the available 70 kg).

* IBW = Ideal Body Weight

Or else, you are a female being 64 inches in height and 80 kilos in weight. Using the same B. J. Devine`s, we come up with the following:

45.5 kg + 2.3 x each inch over 5 feet (60 inches)

45.5 kg + 2.3 x 4 inches (64 – 60)

45.5 kg + 9.2

IBW = 54.7 kg (as opposed to the available 80 kg).

All the above formulas are authoritative, and you can use either of them to estimate your optimal body measurements. The resulting figures will be slightly different, but overall they provide quite a true picture of your weight problems, if any. Yet, remember there is no universally ideal weight, so be rational when calculating your individual kilos.
